Supplements are tools to help fill in gaps your diet may have due to dietary restrictions made by choice or for medical reasons. Our primary goal is to get many of our daily nutrients from whole food sources but given the challenges eating whole food brings even for the cleanest of eaters, completely avoiding nutrient deficiency is borderline impossible. Just think, 92% of Americans have at least one nutrient deficiency…92%!!
Supplements are best used for:
Filling in gaps
Conveniency
Optimizing Results
Fixing extreme gut problems
Importance of Vitamins and Minerals: Also known as micronutrients or “micros”. Micros play a role in every process in the human body. Whether it be helping your body produce energy, to improving brain function, making fat loss easier, boosting your immune system strength, the quality of your hair, skin and nails, micros have their hands in everything and being deficient in even just one can have severe impacts on not only your health but also your ability to progress towards your goals! We strive to consume a diverse profile of whole foods to which includes both animal and plant-based products to achieve an optimal intake of micronutrients. When one begins to restrict certain food groups i.e., no dairy or no red meat or low carb etc., the potential for micronutrient deficiencies begins to rise drastically.
Micro Factor
What is it? A complete, daily nutrient packet that fills in the known and unknown gaps in your “diet”
What is inside? A total of 6 different vitamins and minerals.
What does it include? 6 different products adding up to 8 total capsules/gels. Antioxidant, Multi-vitamin, Probiotic, Fruits/Veggies, EFA (Essential Fatty Acids; Omega 3,6,9) and CoQ10.
Pro Tips: Don’t like swallowing capsules? No worries, there is a powder version with many great tasting flavors to choose from! Also, the capsules are not vegan friendly, but the powder is, so if you practice a vegan based diet, we recommend passing on the capsules and going for the powder.
How to use:
Any time of day works. I suggest choosing a time you can be the most consistent with it. With the Powder, mix (1) scoop with 8 oz. of water. With the nutrient daily pack in capsule form be sure you take it with a meal and 8-10 oz. of water.
Capsules are better than pills or tablets and here’s why; Pills are so condensed that the body has a hard time breaking them down, which can lead to not absorbing the nutrients at all and if your gut isn’t working as well as it should be, it may go right through you into your stool. The outer coating of capsules is very easy to digest, putting less stress on the digestive track and allowing your body to make good use of the nutrients in each product.
Whole food option? 5-7 servings of a VARIETY of fruits and Veggies (eat the rainbow) EVERY day. I may get 2-3 fruits and veggies each day, then this supplement helps me get the other 2-3 servings which my body needs each day.
Opti-Greens 50
What is it? A gut health supplement to aid in digestion, reduce bloating, prevent constipation, balances pH in the body which helps breakdown food and absorb nutrients.
What does it contain? Probiotics, digestive enzymes, fruits & veggies
How / when to use/take it? 2 scoops of powder mixed in 8-10 oz. of water EVERY day. (Can mix with orange juice, or perhaps another supplement you use that is flavored; mango/ mixed berry etc.)
Whole food option? 2-3 servings of fermented foods (Greek yogurt, kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut) AND 2-3 servings of tropical fruits (orange, kiwi, mango, pineapple)
*Keynote must be DAILY.
Importance of gut health = Reduce inflammation throughout the body, promote heart health, cognitive function, and moderate cholesterol levels.
Full Mega (omega 3)
What is it? An ultra-concentrated EPA/ DHA premium Omega 3 fish oil supplement to help improve your body’s natural anti-inflammatory responses and reduce any symptoms of many conditions caused by inflammation.
What does it contain? Omega-3 concentrate!
*You want to be sure the fish oil you consume regularly has a total of 1,000mg or more EPA/DHA
How/ when to use/take it? 2 soft gels with food 10-14 oz. of water (anytime of day works but we prefer to take it with our dinner/ supplement routine).
Whole food option? 3-4 4oz. servings of cold water, wild caught fatty fish EVERY WEEK (this is hard for me to do personally, I typically eat salmon maybe once a week… this can also include anchovies, and mackerel).
Protein Powder Supplements—
As mentioned, food first, supplements second
For most and me personally, I prefer not to eat 3-4 meals of simply meat each day. I like variety, curb cravings and of course conveniency and all the ways to get protein in ON THE GO.
Protein is ESSENTIAL for any goal. While calories determine the weight on the scale, protein determines our body composition when we get to our “goal weight”. Protein is the building block for SO many functions in the body including muscles, bones, hair, skin, nails, cell production, hormones.
Ensuring we have enough protein in our diet from complete protein sources will help build/maintain lean muscle tissue AND help you lose fat and have an easier time maintaining a healthy bodyweight due to its satiating effects. Your daily protein goal is non-negotiable! How you CHOOSE to hit your protein is up to you: Food & supplements is how we do it 😊
Level- 1 Protein Powder
What is it? Low temperature processed, sustained assimilation protein powder. This means it mixes well without any clumping and is easily digested resulting in no bloating and better absorption.
How to use it? Use at least 1 full scoop per day to help reach your daily protein goal. You can simply mix the scoop of protein powder using a shaker bottle, but if you mix in coffee you will want to be sure to get a milk/handheld frother.
When to use it? This is a meal replacement protein powder, so any time of day works! I personally use in the morning coffee, overnight oats, and nightly ritual; The Chocolate PB Protein Fudge. Others will mix as a shake/smoothie, yogurt, or mug cake. Request to join our Wellness Community via Facebook for more recipes on #foodfridays and #supplementsaturdays
